Chapter Six in Learning and Cognition - Constructivist Theory

Constructivism is not a theory but a philosophical explanation of how individuals learn. If one is to look at a constructivist classroom, one would notice that students would be asked to show their mastery of skills through the creation of some type of product. For example, while in this Masters Program we are required to create an ePortfolio. This ePortfolio displays our mastery. This product does not always have to be tangible. It can be a student asking questions or even having a discussion on the topic being taught. What forms of products have you used in your classroom that integrates constructivist views of teaching?

  1. I teach Digital Arts. In my classroom the majority of assignments conclude in the creation of some form of project. In this project students have to recall and apply the techniques and tools learned throughout the unit. I feel that this is a great way to assess student learning and to stimulate the students' recollection of past knowledge.

  2. The constructivism learning theory states that people will learn and form meaning based upon their experiences. Two of the key concepts within the constructivism learning theory which create the construction of an individual's new knowledge are accommodation and assimilation. By enabling our students to learn by using a new program or game forces then to utilize their mind and explore new learning methods

  3. In my area of teaching (Medical) constructivism and problem-based learning is applied daily in our classes. With the help of scenarios and equipment the students work together in groups using information they already know while trying to obtain what they need to know and how and where to access new information that may lead to resolution of the problem. The role of the instructor during our scenarios is that of a facilitator of learning who provides appropriate scaffolding of that process by continually asking the students questions, providing appropriate resources for the students. The instructor will also lead class discussions after the scenarios and design student assessments as far as check off sheet to grade the student performance.

  4. In the past, I have asked the my students to create PowerPoint presentations for book reports. I have tried to have my students see that there are many ways things can be accomplished that are not boring. They have enjoyed coming up with ideas and relaying them back to the class.
